History

It boggles the imagination
And so we don’t think about it
But six million killed would have
Begun with one
And then ten
And then a hundred
And then a thousand
And then a hundred thousand
And then hundreds of thousands

And though we claim that one man was responsible
That one man killed six million
He did not
He could not have

How many people were complicit?
How many indifferent?
How many silent?
How many helped them?
How many helped him?

How many nations were complicit?
How many indifferent?
How many silent?
How many helped them?
How many helped him?

It takes a village to raise a child, they say
It takes the whole world to kill people

History repeats itself, they say
But surely, that is only if
We let it
History is made by men and women
History is made by me and you
